Torres del Paine W Trek
By John Jones
What follows is a quick guide to the Torres del Paine W Trek in Patagonia Chile. This is the shortest of the Park's best two known treks, the other one is the Circuit. Distance The W is about 75km (46 miles) long - about 30 hours of trekking, depending on your fitness and whether or not you're carrying a pack. It is possible to complete the W in three days, but four to six is more likely. While an average walking speed of 1.5 miles an hour might seem slow, this is realistic as there are some steep climbs (to the French Valley and The Towers) and the weather can slow you down. Getting to the Start You can start the W either at Paine Grande Mountain Lodge or Refugios Torre Central and Norte. Getting to Paine Grande Mountain Lodge Take a bus from Puerto Natales to the Catamaran Dock at Pudeto. Buses run twice a day (7-8am; 2.30pm) and take 3 hours 15 minutes. Then take the catamaran across Lago Pehoe to the Lodge. It runs at 9am, 12pm, 6pm and takes about 30 minutes. Getting to Refugio Las Torres Take the bus from Puerto Natales to the Park Entrance at Laguna Amarga. Bus times are as above, but journey time is only 2 hours 15 minutes. From there, Las Torres runs regular shuttles to Refugios Las Torre Central and Norte. Where to Stay Choose from refugios and campsites. Refugios A refugio is a sort of wilderness lodge, with dormitories, bedrooms, a restaurant and sometimes other facilities, such as internet access. The following refugios are on the W Trek: Paine Grande Mountain Lodge; Refugio Grey; Los Cuernos; Torre Central and Norte; and El Chileno. Campsites All the refugios listed above have campsites attached, but there are also wild campsites, which usually only have a pit WC and a fire pit. On the W trek these are Camp Italiano, Camp Britannico and Camp Torres. How to Book Refugios and Campsites Refugios can be booked via the websites of FántasticoSur and Vertice Patagonia or through agents in Punta Arenas and Puerto Natales.
